Back 40 Mercantile – A Contemporary Twist to a Traditional Concept

Co-owners Leslie King and Katrina Bischoff, along with their husbands, conceived the idea for Back 40 Mercantile after making the jump from corporate life in Manhattan to organic farming in upstate Connecticut.

Just like they found a balance half way in their design, Back 40 seems to have met half way in their decided location for their store. Reminiscent of small town general stores, King and Bischoff opened up shop in Old Greenwich, Connecticut – PowerSecure Lighting's and Solais' neighboring town!

The approachable design speaks to its affluent clientele. “[The owners] could very easily bring Manhattan-chic to Old Greenwich, but that’s not what they’re about,” says Kathleen Jordan, principal, Gensler (San Francisco). “They’re providing

based on the values of that community, and that’s why it resonates.”

They found the balance in their design in a variety of ways – one of which was using Solais LED trackhead fixtures to create the perfect lighting along with the natural light that spills in their large storefront windows.
